Bankrupt Magazine - Call for Submissions

March 12th, 2009 The Editor Posted in Creative Non-Fiction, Fiction, Markets No Comments »

Bankrupt Magazine — a newly launched Vancouver online literary magazine — has placed a call for submissions for short fiction and literary non-fiction:

Bankrupt Magazine is a place for up-and-coming Vancouver writers to share their work with the world.

Our stories are written for readers, not just other writers. We believe reading should be exciting; it should grab you and say: “Hold on tight, this is going to be wild.” It should be accessible, not elitist. Anyone should be able to pick up a piece of good writing and say: “You were right, that was one hell of a ride.”

We welcome submissions from residents of Metro Vancouver, Canada. We accept all genres of short fiction and all forms of literary non-fiction.

Vancouver author Andreas Schroeder will read from his newly published autobiographical novel — Renovating Heaven — on March 26th at Robson Square.

Tracing the history of Mennonite life in BC from the 50’s to the 70’s, Renovating Heaven follows Schroeder and his family as they settle on a small Fraser Valley farm and proceed to try to make sense of the perplexing behaviour and values of “The English” who surround them. New Yorker writer Edith Iglauer has called this book “a masterpiece”.

Schroeder is the author of 22 books, and holds the Rogers Communications Chair in Creative Nonfiction in UBC’s Creative Writing program.

The Tyee: Big Ideas 2009

January 24th, 2009 The Editor Posted in Creative Non-Fiction, Other Opportunities No Comments »

The Tyee has placed a call for submissions for their Big Ideas 2009 series:

Think big. Then share your thinking with us.

This is an open invitation to help Canada (and the rest of the world) brainstorm a better future by pointing The Tyee community to the best important ideas for 2009.

Have an idea so original it hasn’t been floated on the web anywhere else yet? You are invited to submit an article laying out your thinking. We ask you to substantiate your ideas with facts and clear, reasoned arguments. (No rants please). And please understand that the article would run under your byline — your real name, not your Tyee commenter’s nickname. Send your submission to: editor@thetyee.ca and make the subject line: Big Idea for 2009.

Pretty much every area of life is fair game. Come up with a bright new approach to education, the arts, medicine, government, activism, business, family life, religion, sex… you name it.

Full details at The Tyee.
