So you think you’re a genius?

January 19th, 2009 The Editor Posted in Career & Education, Events, Other Opportunities, Students, Faculty, and Alumni, UBC, UBC Creative Writing No Comments »

UBC Creative Writing’s informal meeting of the minds — The Teaching Brown Bag — meets this Thursday at noon.

The Teaching Brown Bag is an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to come together to eat, talk, and meet other members of the UBC Creative Writing community.

Thursday’s session will discuss the topic of the romantic artist-genius mythos, and how it finds its way into creative writing programs. Does the mythos of the writer as a divinely inspired being hinder the budding writer?  Can creative writing be taught?  If we think we’re not “geniuses”, should we throw in the towel?  How can we nurture the process of writing as craft, without being daunted by the notion of the unattainable masterpiece?

Event Details:

Thursday, January 22 (12:00 pm)
UBC Campus, Buchanan E476
1866 Main Mall, Vancouver

MFA Success: Melanie Little

October 10th, 2008 The Editor Posted in Career & Education, Interviews, Markets, PRISM, Students, Faculty, and Alumni No Comments »

Today’s National Post has a profile of Melanie Little, a recent MFA graduate and former PRISM magazine editor.  From the profile:

Melanie Little is Freehand’s editor and sole employee. Though she’s only been on the job for 13 months, her editorial direction has already guided the press to acclaim: Besides the Giller nod for Endicott, another one of her authors, Saleema Nawaz, has been nominated for the $10,000 Journey Prize.

“We’re just waiting for the next one,” she laughs. “I’m not surprised at all. But it is really nice to have one’s taste vindicated.”

[...] Previously, she worked as an editor with lit mag PRISM International in Vancouver while completing her MFA in creative writing at the University of British Columbia. She’s also a published author, having penned a children’s book and a collection of short stories, which may make her a little bit more sympathetic to writers’ concerns.

“What Melanie has does with Freehand as a writer in an editorial position,” says Endicott, “[is] sought to right all the wrongs that have ever been done to writers. And she’s succeeded magnificently.”

Congratulations Melanie! Continue reading the full profile at the National Post.
