Volunteer for PuSH Festival

January 6th, 2010 The Editor Posted in Events, Other Opportunities, Stage, Work Opportunities No Comments »

Get involved with the 2010 PuSh Festival — Volunteer!
The annual PuSh International Performing Arts Festival is one of Vancouver’s signature events. Produced over 20 days each January, the PuSh Festival presents groundbreaking work in the live performing arts: theatre, dance, music and various hybrid forms of performance. It attracts acclaimed local, national and international artists and their work.

This year’s Festival takes place from January 20 to February 6, 2010 and we’re looking for people to fill volunteer positions in Front of House, Hospitality, Program Distribution, and Artist Transportation!
Volunteering for PuSh is a fantastic opportunity to meet people and make new friends! You’ll work closely with a diverse group of exceptional people – national, and international performers, festival patrons, fellow volunteers, and festival staff will all be there!  You’ll also come out with transferable skills, training and knowledge about PuSh Festival, welcome and interact with visitors from around the world while giving back to the arts’ community and have tons of fun doing it all.
Volunteers will be provided with a cool t-shirt to wear while on shift and to keep as memorabilia.  All volunteers will receive an invite to a fun-filled Wrap Party for them and a friend, free admission to shows in the PuSh Festival program, and an exclusive volunteer badge that allows each volunteer access to even more additional shows! (Subject to availability)
For more information about volunteering and to access our online registration form, please follow this link:

MFA Grad Dave Deveau’s Nelly Boy

October 23rd, 2009 The Editor Posted in Events, Stage, Students, Faculty, and Alumni, UBC Creative Writing No Comments »

Our MFA Grad Dave Deveau’s success in stageplay!  Welcome all to attend:

Zee Zee Theatre presents
in association with Screaming Weenie Productions
part of the See Seven Subscription Series

Nelly Boy
by Dave Deveau (MFA Playwriting, 2008)

Though biologically male, 15-year-old Nelly is hardly a boy. Not everything can be as black and white. A tumultuous teenager in a family who fundamentally can’t understand gender difference, living in the shadow of twin sisters and grappling with complicated gender expression, Nelly’s suburban life and identity come head to head.

After being taken in by police for running naked along the only highway out of the suburbs, Nelly ushers us into a world of opposing gender ideals, hatred, and his/her own perceptions of the world in order to survive. The ongoing search for truth becomes the primary thrust of Nelly’s world, as an unknown man brings every step of Nelly’s story into question. But at the core of the tale sits the inner workings of a brilliant teenage mind trying to grapple with the greater picture.

Brave New Play Rites

March 31st, 2009 The Editor Posted in Events, Stage, Students, Faculty, and Alumni, UBC Creative Writing No Comments »

Brave New Play Rites — UBC’s festival of original one-act plays — begins this Wednesday, April 1st and runs until April 5th:

A quadrapelgic woman longs for her hotrod. Frankenstein’s monster copes with his dysfunctional family. Knives are thrown. Public hair, exposed. Lies, revealed. Come join us for this fearlessly creative UBC tradition, an opportunity to see the new work of emerging playwrights, directors, and performers. The show features twelve new, daring one-act plays, each written, directed, and designed by students from UBC’s acclaimed Theatre and Creative Writing programs.

The students work under the direction of professors John Cooper, Bryan Wade, and Jayson McLean.

This year’s show includes plays written by both MFA and BFA creative writing students. Eclectic and bold, these pieces challenge and entertain with a mix of comedy and drama. This is where Canada’s groundbreaking theatre is born!
